All
Perth
Diving Academy Open Water Diving courses consists of performance based
learning. Using audio visuals, textbooks with knowledge review questions and quizzes to
test your knowledge we can reduce the time you spend sitting behind a desk in the
classroom.
Our instructors will work with you through each session,
elaborate on the audio visuals and review your knowledge with quizzes. You will need to
read the assigned sections prior to the five academic sessions, your instructor and the
shop staff will advise you what sections you need to read.
As part of the Perth Diving Academy commitment to your safe
diving education we include an Advanced Diver text book with your Open Water
Adventure course pack. This is to allow you to gain
even more knowledge and provide you with the opportunity for more on-going advanced
training after your diving course.
On course completion of your Open Water Adventure Plus Diving Course you will be issued
with PADI Advanced Diver certification as well as your PADI Open Water
certification.
The performance based learning system means
that the course you are about to undertake is practically orientated to get you out of the
classroom and spend more time in the water. With our indoor heated pool we can offer the
five individual confined water modules that move at a comfortable pace.
Perth Diving Academy will provide six open water dives, two shore
based and four boat based. You must complete all these dives to receive your
certification. The dives must be done in order one to six and if you miss any of the dives
you will be charged to make them up. The cost of these dives will include instructor and
the use of equipment.
The
Balcatta facility indoor heated pool.
The pools on site make
training with small or large groups easy!
In
our local area (Perth/Rottnest) a vast majority of the better dive sites are accessed by
boat. The Perth Diving Academy Open Water Adventure course has four boat dives and includes all
the academic and practical skills to provide you with the confidence and
certification as a SAFE diver. The Deep Adventure dive will mean that you will
have a deeper depth rating than a PADI Open Water Diver.
At end of your course we believe you will be a safe diver but you still
wont a have a full range of training to cover all diving conditions. For example,
wreck diving, night diving and deep diving all require that additional training should be
undertaken to gain experience and education in these specific areas.
The Deep and Naturalist Adventure dives
specialty rating you will receive is a step towards Advanced Diver training which will
give you more experience and education. Your instructor will advise you of more details
during the course and make sure that you are aware of the options available to you for
future on-going education.
It is
essential that your skills be put to good use on a regular basis. If you dont have
the opportunity to dive for a long period of time and you feel a lack of confidence, you
may consider a Scuba review or other at-home study program to refresh and hone your
skills. Of course Perth Diving Academy can arrange specific refresher programs to suit
most life-styles so if you are in doubt give us a call.
"The aspect of the course, which sets the Perth Diving Academy
standard higher than any other program in Western Australia, is the amount of in-water
training time on our basic courses."
"We are the only
Perth dive store with indoor heated pools at two convenient locations. These facilities
allows us to include a minimum of 5 pool sessions in all courses and more if needed."
"The PDA facility at Rous
Head provides an ideal training ground for all types of open water diving as well as
specialty instruction like Wreck diver and Underwater Naturalist."
Equipment
Equipment is as big a part of being a safe
diver as Education and Experience. If you dont have good equipment its pretty
hard to be a safe diver.
During the Perth Diving Academy Open Water plus Boat Diving course we will provide you with all the necessary
equipment.
The equipment that we provide for you is the same as your instructor uses.
It consists of quality black silicone mask, snorkel, open heel fins and
wetsuit boots. We also provide a 5mm two piece wet suit and the correct
amount of weights for that suit. Our scuba units are quality Aqualung air
delivery systems with Suunto computer gauges and compass fitted. The
Seaquest Buoyancy Control Jackets are picked to suit our local conditions
and engineered in the United States for durability and high quality of
construction.
The cost of rental for this equipment during your course is
included in the up-front course fee. However you will be responsible for any loss that
occurs to the equipment issued to you during the course.
This is a popular option and allows you
to spread your dive course over three weeks. An introductory session is held usually on a
pre arranged Friday evening and three other evenings are required over the first week.
Three full days are also selected on weekends to complete the course and carry out the
five ocean dives.
A typical format for the course would be three evenings the first week, usually starting
each evening at 6.00pm and covering approx. 90 mins of theory and 90 mins of poolwork.
On the weekend following the evening sessions one day (Saturday) would be allocated for
the two shore dives and theory revision. The Sunday is used for the first two boat dives
with the last two boat dives being run on the final Saturday. Perth has the
finest diving available in Australia and two dives are conducted on each
day.
Full-time
Scuba Courses
Week Days
This course format is designed for those who wish to learn to dive quickly and who are
available during the weekdays. These courses run from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
Monday to Wednesday is theory and pool training with two 90min sessions each per day and
the shore dives on the Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are spent conducting the remaining four ocean dives from one of our purpose built charter vessels.
Weekend Courses
A third option is to learn to dive over three weekends (or two weekends if one of them is
a public holiday long weekend). This course run from 8.30am to 5.30pm during the weekend
days and allows a greater degree of flexibility in planning a suitable time frame for the
course. The course content and timetable is the same as the one week course but the extra
day allows a more leisurely and relaxed approach to the program as well as additional time for revision
if required.
Custom
Courses
If you can gather a group of four
or more and would like to learn together, we can tailor make a course for you. Just let us
know the days and times most convenient to you and we will develop a format exclusively
for your group.
Our training facilities are also available for you to practice your snorkelling and scuba
skills or just try out newly purchased equipment.
PADI Referral Dives
If you have completed all your open water academic and enclosed water training at another
location but wish to finish off your open water training with Perth Diving Academy, we can
offer referral dives. These dives cost $100 per dive with all equipment provided, if this
completes your certification requirements there is a $55 registration/certification fee.
You must have the completed paperwork from your initial training facility to take
advantage of this offer. Enclosed water sessions are also available at only
$45 per
session.

Pre-Requisites
PDA, PADI and Australian
Standard's Association require that before you complete your scuba diving course you must
fulfil certain pre requisites. These include:

three months prior to the course start date

able to complete the course safely and confidently. Our instructors are only too happy to
help you complete any details to ensure your smooth progression through the above pre
requisites.
Medicals
Your continued health and well
being are your most valuable assets. To ensure that you are in a fit and healthy state to
undertake scuba diving, a diving medical must be obtained from a qualified diving doctor.
We strongly recommend that you attend one of the specialist diving medical centres unless
you local Doctor is fully conversant with the provisions of the standards and practices
involved in diving. Your medical examination through a specialist centre will be conducted
in accordance with Australian Standard 4005.1-1992 and will ensure, amongst other things,
that you are able to adequately compensate your ears for changes in pressure. This is a
vital function, which must be confirmed before commencing a scuba course.
Medically
In-date.
Your initial medical must be undertaken within 90 days of the initial
course. Once you have completed your Open Water training you should remain
medically in-date for your diving. Australian Standards requires divers to
have medicals every 5 years up to the age of 30, every 3 years up to the
age of 50 and then over 50 a medical must be taken annually.
Listed on this site are a selection of Doctors that can offer a proper medical at a low fixed
cost (usually around $85.00) Please phone the medical centre direct for an appointment and
current cost.
