Freedom 8 Electrical Shark Deterrent System
The Science behind the Freedom 8 Electrical Shark Deterrent system is built on a well‑established principle in shark biology: sharks depend on their ampullae of Lorenzini – highly sensitive electroreceptors – to interpret the tiny electrical signals emitted by living prey. These receptors are incredibly effective at close‑range detection, but they’re also extremely vulnerable to strong, irregular electrical fields.
 
A Purpose‑Built Electrical Field That Disrupts Shark Approach Behavior
The Freedom8 generates a powerful, low‑frequency electrical field between two electrodes. This field extends in a three‑dimensional radius around the diver. When a shark enters the field, the signal overwhelms its electroreceptors, creating a strong but harmless aversive sensation. The shark’s natural response is to veer away.
 
For divers, this means a significant reduction in the likelihood of a close‑range encounter, without affecting normal marine life or the surrounding environment.
What Happens Underwater
The Freedom8 emits a precisely tuned electrical pulse optimised for shark sensory disruption.
The pulse forms a protective zone around the diver, typically extending several meters.
As a shark approaches, the field interferes with its electroreception, triggering a clear avoidance response.
The deterrent effect is behavioral, not injurious – the shark is not harmed, only repelled.
